iPhone Duo Case Front-Frame Fit Guide: Shift Left Edge, Overlap & Protectors

Last updated . We have not tested these cases ourselves. Findings come from the reviewers linked on each point.

Most two-piece iPhone Duo cases put a thin frame around the outer display. That frame decides three things: whether part of the screen gets covered, whether you need to change a display setting, and whether a screen protector fits. Here's how to check before you buy.

Shift Left Edge: what it is

When you fit Apple's iPhone Duo Case, the phone prompts you to turn on Shift Left Edge in Settings > Display & Brightness. Apple says it shifts the outer display's content to make room for the front of the case (Apple Support). Spigen's Amazon listings tell owners of its Ultra Hybrid Pro and Air Fit Pro to turn on the same setting (Amazon listing). Bare, by contrast, says its Bare Naked case doesn't need it (Bare).

If a case maker tells you to turn it on, assume its frame overlaps the edge of the screen.

Three ways a front frame causes trouble

  1. Covering the display. case-tester.com found a visible strip of display under the TORRAS front bar, and under the Apple Duo Case frame on its unit (case-tester.com).
  2. Hinge bumpers over the screen. When the phone is open, some hinge covers end up over nearly half an inch of the outer display and the left-edge controls (WSJ Buy Side).
  3. Lifting a screen protector. Protectors leave a narrow strip free at the edge, and that's where frames sit; the frame pushes the glass up (case-tester.com).

Frame-free options

Back shell, nothing on the front

JETech Vegan Leather Case with Hinge Protection

Hinge covered at the side, strong MagSafe, works with a protector.

  • Back shell only: no front frame and no adhesive strips, so it comes off whenever you like. (case-tester.com)
  • Hinge is covered at the side; the shell folds back against the phone by itself. (case-tester.com)
  • MagSafe held 1.84 kg on case-tester.com's pull gauge, the strongest of the US-available cases tested. (case-tester.com)
  • Because nothing sits on the front, a screen protector works without trouble. (case-tester.com)
  • Downsides: protects the back only, no inner lining, frame stays exposed. (case-tester.com)
  • Amazon listing states: back cover with hinge protection only; front cover and screen protector NOT included. (Amazon product listing)

Attachment: No adhesive: back shell only, comes off whenever you like (case-tester.com)

Magnetic folio, no front frame

Apple iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand

Takes a protector; frame exposed; weakest MagSafe hold measured.

  • Attaches purely by magnets, front and back; takes a screen protector without issue; microfibre lining. (case-tester.com)
  • Frame is fully exposed, and MagSafe hold measured 0.88 kg, which case-tester.com says rules out a car mount. (case-tester.com)
  • Popular Mechanics' 'Best Folio' pick; it notes magnet-only attachment isn't as secure as a snap-on case in a heavy drop. (Popular Mechanics)
  • WSJ cautions that folio-style cases block either the outer display or the main cameras; you can't use both at once. (WSJ Buy Side)

Attachment: Magnetic only, front and back; no adhesive (case-tester.com, MacRumors)
