Will a Case Stop iPhone Duo Screen Cracks? What a Case Can and Can't Protect
Last updated . We have not tested these cases ourselves. Findings come from the reviewers linked on each point.
A case helps with drops onto the outside of the phone. It can't protect the inner folding display, and it won't prevent the inner-display cracking Apple acknowledged on a small number of early units. Here's what each kind of damage is, and what actually helps.
What Apple said about inner-display cracks
After owners reported cracks along the hinge on the inner display, Apple told MacRumors and 9to5Mac it is aware of an issue affecting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units, and that affected owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement (MacRumors, 9to5Mac). According to those reports, Apple says most units aren't affected and the problem shows up soon after purchase rather than developing later; 9to5Mac adds that you don't need AppleCare+ for this replacement. Apple hasn't said what causes it.
What that means for cases: no case was linked to these cracks, either as a cause or a fix. If your inner display cracks along the hinge early on, contact AppleCare rather than buying a tougher case.
What a case can protect
- Back, corners and camera in a drop: that's what rugged cases are built for. Drop ratings on packaging are manufacturer claims; none of our sources ran standardized drop tests.
- The hinge spine, if the case has a hinge cover. case-tester.com notes the spine is what takes the hit when the phone lands on its side (case-tester.com).
- The outer display, partly: a raised lip helps face-down, and a protector helps if your case has no front frame (details).
What a case can't protect
- The inner display. Nothing can rest on it or the phone wouldn't close (case-tester.com).
- Things folded inside. Apple warns that folding hard objects such as keys or coins inside the phone can damage the inner display, and says to clear the screen before closing (Apple Support).
- Grit at the hinge. Apple asks owners to keep sand and grit away from the hinge and to check it's clean before opening (Apple Support).
Don't peel the inner layer
The matte layer on the inner display isn't a removable screen protector. Apple calls it an integral part of the display and says not to remove it (Apple Support). case-tester.com explains that peeling it damages the display, while a worn layer can be replaced by Apple (case-tester.com).
