In case-tester.com's hands-on test of four outer-display protectors, the TORRAS Anti-Reflect (OrigArmor) was the best of the three sold in the US. Spigen's GLAS.tR EZ FIT was the easiest to put on, and JETech's 3-pack was the cheapest. The catch: none of them works under a case with a front frame, so pair a protector with a back-shell or folio case.

The three protectors

Best overall

TORRAS 3D Curved OrigArmor Anti-Reflective Screen Protector

The one case-tester.com would buy from the US lineup if you want full coverage and an invisible finish. You pay extra for it.

  • Best overall of the three US-available protectors in case-tester.com's test, and the cleanest install: two tiny bubbles that disappeared. (case-tester.com)
  • Largest of the four tested at 79 x 114 mm; black frame and rounded edges, so it disappears into the display. (case-tester.com)
  • The only one with an anti-reflective coating. It measurably cut glare under a harsh lamp, but less than its reputation suggests. (case-tester.com)
  • One protector per box, no spare. (case-tester.com)

Easiest to install

Spigen GLAS.tR EZ FIT Screen Protector (2-pack)

The best applicator in the test. Buy it for the easy install, and check every corner once it's on.

  • Simplest installation of all four tested, with two protectors and two full kits in the box. (case-tester.com)
  • Covers the full display area, but has no black frame and the edges aren't rounded. (case-tester.com)
  • On case-tester.com's unit one corner would not stick down. The tester says it may be a one-off. (case-tester.com)

Cheapest, three to practise with

JETech 9H+ Front Screen Protector (3-pack)

Nearly the same glass as the Spigen. The tray is what lets it down.

  • Cheapest in the test: three protectors per pack. The glass is practically identical to the Spigen. (case-tester.com)
  • The weak point is the drop-in tray: the glass went on crooked and left air pockets at the edge on the tester's unit. (case-tester.com)
  • Smallest protector in the test; no black frame, edges not rounded. (case-tester.com)
  • JETech's Amazon listing says it is not compatible with Apple's official cases that have a front cover. (Amazon product listing)

Which cases they work with

All four protectors leave a narrow strip uncovered at the edge (about two millimetres on the smaller ones), and that's where most iPhone Duo cases put their front frame. Fit a front-frame case over a protector and it pushes the glass up. case-tester.com says this follows from the phone having to fold shut, so it isn't a fault in any one protector (case-tester.com).

What works is a case with no front piece. In case-tester.com's case test, the JETech back shell, the TORRO wallet and Apple's Folio all worked with a protector (case-tester.com). See iPhone Duo cases that work with a screen protector.

Using Apple's own iPhone Duo Case? It has a front frame. TORRAS sells a SunView AR HD protector that it says is made only for that case (manufacturer claim, TORRAS). JETech's Amazon listing says its protector doesn't fit Apple's cases with a front cover (Amazon listing). Details: screen protectors for the Apple iPhone Duo Case.

Never on the inner display

These are protectors for the outer display. The folding inner display has a factory cover layer. Apple says not to remove it and warns that adding a screen protector can compromise the display (Apple Support). case-tester.com tried an inner film anyway and still advises against it (case-tester.com).

Quick answers

How many protectors should I buy?
Plan for at least two, says case-tester.com: something usually goes wrong on the first try. JETech ships three, Spigen two and TORRAS one.
Is an anti-reflective coating worth it?
The effect is real but small. It glares less under a harsh lamp, and you barely notice it day to day (case-tester.com).
What does a black frame do?
A black border with rounded edges blends into the display. Without it you can see the edge of the glass and feel it when you swipe (case-tester.com). Of the three US protectors, only the TORRAS has one.
Can I use a protector and a case at the same time?
Only if the case has no front frame (case-tester.com).
