Yes, if the case has strong enough magnets. case-tester.com measured each case's MagSafe hold with a pull gauge and says anything above about 1 kg holds reliably on a car mount, even over rough roads, while below that it gets risky. In its test, the JETech back shell held best at 1.84 kg. Apple's Folio (0.88 kg) and the magnet-free TORRO wallet are the ones to keep off a car mount.

Our picks for the car (based on published tests)

Strongest measured hold

JETech Vegan Leather Case with Hinge Protection

The best number in the test and the cheapest case in it. It covers the back, the hinge side and the camera, and nothing sits on the front display.

  • Back shell only: no front frame and no adhesive strips, so it comes off whenever you like. (case-tester.com)
  • Hinge is covered at the side; the shell folds back against the phone by itself. (case-tester.com)
  • MagSafe held 1.84 kg on case-tester.com's pull gauge, the strongest of the US-available cases tested. (case-tester.com)
  • Because nothing sits on the front, a screen protector works without trouble. (case-tester.com)
  • Downsides: protects the back only, no inner lining, frame stays exposed. (case-tester.com)
  • Amazon listing states: back cover with hinge protection only; front cover and screen protector NOT included. (Amazon product listing)

Attachment: No adhesive: back shell only, comes off whenever you like (case-tester.com)

Car mount plus a kickstand

TORRAS Q3 Spin Case with 360° Magnetic Stand

It clears the 1 kg mark and adds a 360° kickstand for the desk. Expect bulk, and a front bar that covers a strip of the display.

  • The only case in case-tester.com's test covering back, hinge, camera and front display; ships with a screen protector and spare adhesive strips. (case-tester.com)
  • 360° kickstand rotates and holds at any angle. (case-tester.com)
  • Front bar covers a visible strip of the display; adds bulk. Tester's suggestion: use the back shell only plus a screen protector. (case-tester.com)
  • 9to5Mac also lists a VegSkin leather version. (9to5Mac)

Attachment: Mixed: back shell snaps on without glue; front frame sticks on with adhesive; spare strips included (case-tester.com)

Keep these off a car mount

Cases nobody has measured yet

These say they have MagSafe magnets, but none of our sources put them on a pull gauge, so their car-mount hold is not established. A maker's figure or magnet grade is a claim, not a measured hold through the case.

Quick answers

What does the kilogram figure mean?
It's how hard case-tester.com had to pull before the phone came off a MagSafe stand, measured with a pull gauge through each case. Higher holds better.
Is 1 kg a hard limit?
It's case-tester.com's rule of thumb: above it, the phone held reliably on a car mount over rough surfaces, and below it things get risky (case-tester.com).
Do wallet and folio cases work on a car mount?
The two in the test didn't do well. Apple's Folio measured 0.88 kg and TORRO's wallet has no magnets (case-tester.com). See wallet and folio listings for others, which haven't been measured.
Can I charge on a MagSafe car charger through a case?
It depends on the case. TORRO says its wallet isn't suitable for in-car MagSafe chargers (Amazon listing). For the other cases, our sources didn't test car chargers, so it's not established.
Does Apple's own iPhone Duo Case work?
Apple says it has built-in magnets, but its hold wasn't measured by our sources. More on that case: how Apple's Duo Case attaches.
